A coyote became the first known animal to cross the unfinished Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the Ventura Freeway in Agoura Hills at 1:35 a.m. Thursday. Two cameras captured the animal heading north on the structure, according to the Save L.A. Cougars campaign. National Park Service biologist Jeff Sikich notified campaign leader Beth Pratt of the sighting. Sikich and Pratt had previously predicted which species would first use the bridge, which is officially scheduled to open December 2. National Park Service biologists are installing remote cameras for a long-term monitoring program to study how wildlife reuses the fragmented ecosystem, according to wildlife branch lead Seth Riley.
