If your weekend plans involve a scenic train ride along the Southern California coast, you’ll want to double-check your schedule for mid-September. Amtrak has announced a complete shutdown of its Pacific Surfliner service between San Diego and San Luis Obispo on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13.
The widespread disruption is a result of a coordinated effort by Union Pacific, Metrolink, and the North County Transit District. Rather than individual, piecemeal projects causing multiple headaches, these rail agencies are tackling several infrastructure jobs simultaneously along the LOSSAN corridor. The goal, it seems, is to condense potential travel frustrations into a single, comprehensive weekend.
During this two-day period, there will be no Pacific Surfliner trains operating across the entire route. Crucially, travelers should note that unlike some other service interruptions, there will be no bus bridges to replace the canceled train service. This means anyone counting on the Surfliner to get them from Los Angeles to Orange County, San Diego, or up to the Central Coast will need to secure completely different transportation.
The maintenance work is spread across various critical sections of the track. South of Los Angeles, crews will be active on the Orange Subdivision, just south of the Irvine Station. Here, work will focus on extending Marine Way beneath the tracks, which is intended to provide improved access to Orange County's Great Park. Further south, in the San Clemente area, crews will reconfigure work zones to support ongoing slope stabilization and trail reconstruction efforts.
North of Los Angeles, the Ventura Subdivision will also see significant activity. Inside Tunnel 26, located north of Chatsworth, crews will be performing ballast cleaning and water-pump maintenance. This work is essential for protecting the railroad tracks from deterioration. Additionally, general track maintenance and rehabilitation will be carried out at various other locations along the Ventura Subdivision.
Before the full weekend closure, there's another disruption to be aware of for those traveling on Friday, September 11. Metrolink's repair work will impact two evening trains. Train 794 will terminate in Los Angeles, with passengers provided bus accommodations for onward travel. Train 595, meanwhile, will be canceled outright, with passengers also accommodated by bus service.
While Amtrak connection buses will continue to operate during the September 12-13 weekend closure, this doesn't mean your regular train-to-bus itinerary will be viable. Regularly scheduled train connections to those buses simply won't be available. So, for anyone planning to travel between San Diego, Irvine, San Clemente, Ventura, Los Angeles, or San Luis Obispo that specific weekend, making alternate arrangements is the only option, as the familiar Surfliner will be taking a break.
