Metrolink will suspend service on its Orange County Line between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside for five days, beginning Monday, due to anticipated high tides along the southern Orange County coastline. The temporary closure is a preventative measure, aimed at avoiding wider disruptions as coastal conditions become challenging for the beachfront tracks near San Clemente.
During the suspension, which runs through Friday, Orange County Line trains will operate only between Los Angeles Union Station and the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station. Metrolink has stated it will not provide replacement bus service for the affected segment of the route.
The decision comes after similar weather events caused significant issues for coastal rail operations. In September, high tides and powerful waves overtopped tracks near San Clemente. This led to erosion and slope damage, which forced a temporary suspension of Metrolink, Amtrak, and freight service while crews conducted emergency repairs.
By turning trains around at Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, Metrolink officials said they hope to maintain more predictable service for the remainder of the Orange County Line. This adjustment is also expected to reduce the amount of rail traffic moving through the particularly vulnerable coastal corridor. The agency anticipates this reduction in traffic could potentially limit weather-related delays for Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and freight trains that share the same tracks.
Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains are currently expected to continue operating through the area, provided that conditions remain safe, according to Metrolink.
Metrolink emphasized its ongoing efforts to manage the situation. In a statement, the agency said, "Metrolink will continue to coordinate with rail partners and monitor coastal conditions throughout the week." The agency added that qualified personnel will conduct frequent inspections, and crews and equipment will be staged nearby to respond quickly to any potential impacts on the track infrastructure.
Passengers planning to travel on Metrolink’s Orange County Line are encouraged to check metrolinktrains.com for the latest service updates before heading out. Similarly, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passengers should consult pacificsurfliner.com for information regarding any possible disruptions to their service. The proactive suspension reflects the ongoing challenges of maintaining critical infrastructure along Southern California’s dynamic coastline.
