The main entrance area of Disneyland in Anaheim saw an unusual police response Monday night after park security discovered two suspicious bags, prompting an evacuation and a call to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad. The incident unfolded as Disneyland security staff alerted the Anaheim Police Department to the items at approximately 9:50 p.m.
Sgt. Eric Anderson of the Anaheim Police Department confirmed details regarding the discovery. The two bags were found near a roundabout that serves as a key access point to the park’s main entry plaza. One of the bags immediately drew suspicion due to its contents and appearance; it contained marbles and had wires visibly sticking out from it. A second bag also presented an odd sight, covered with duct tape and featuring sharp instruments protruding from its exterior. Further adding to the peculiar scene, one of the bags was positioned on a dolly.
Upon receiving the alert, Anaheim police officers quickly responded to the scene. Their initial assessment led to a decision to evacuate the immediate vicinity around the main entrance. Disneyland visitors who were in the affected area were safely directed by officers to use another exit from the park, ensuring public safety during the investigation. Recognizing the potential seriousness of the situation, Anaheim police then requested the specialized expertise of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad.
The bomb squad units were dispatched to the Anaheim theme park to assess the suspicious items. Their technicians meticulously examined both bags to determine if they posed any threat. This thorough investigation concluded shortly before midnight. Sgt. Anderson later reported that the bomb squad successfully determined the bags were harmless. Crucially, the inspection confirmed that neither of the bags contained any explosive materials.
While the immediate threat was resolved, police are continuing their inquiry into the incident. Sgt. Anderson indicated that investigators believe the bags were intentionally placed with the specific intent to appear suspicious. The Anaheim Police Department is actively working to identify and locate the individual or individuals responsible for leaving the items at such a prominent public location. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to understand the motivations behind the deliberate act.
