San Diego has hosted its Pride celebrations for more than half a century, a significant cultural event for the city. However, the organization behind one of San Diego’s largest annual gatherings, San Diego Pride, is now navigating financial difficulties that will lead to substantial changes for future events.

The organization has reported a downturn in its revenue streams, particularly from corporate sponsorships and grant funding. This decline comes as the operational costs for hosting the celebrations continue to climb. A review of past tax returns showed that San Diego Pride was already operating close to its break-even point before the current challenges emerged.

Kisha Lynn Elliott, the executive director of San Diego Pride, acknowledged the need for adaptation. She stated that while the organization is dedicated to its future, the upcoming celebrations will inevitably differ from what has been historically produced. Elliott pointed to widespread economic pressures as a contributing factor, noting that expenses, including those for ensuring public safety, have increased significantly.

These financial hurdles follow a period of public discussion surrounding Pride 2025. The controversy centered on headlining artist Kehlani and her expressed views on the conflict in the Middle East. Following this, several sponsors, notably UC San Diego, withdrew their support. When asked about reflections on this situation, Elliott indicated that while there was a sense of hurt emerging from the dialogue, the feedback largely focused on hopes for future improvements rather than ultimatums about past decisions.

Despite the current financial landscape, organizers have confirmed that the San Diego Pride parade will proceed in 2027. Elliott reiterated that while the event is assured, its format will be significantly altered from previous years. To manage the financial pressures, the organization anticipates making cuts across its operations. Elliott confirmed that exploring cuts, potentially within the operating model and even the staffing structure, is an immediate necessity to reduce expenses.

The overarching goal, according to organizers, is to align the spending with the available funds, ensuring that the Pride celebrations continue in a sustainable manner for the community. The latest tax returns for San Diego Pride are currently being processed and were not available for a full financial accounting.
