Comic-Con International is back in downtown San Diego from Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26, bringing with it the usual crowds of cosplayers, celebrity sightings, and previews of upcoming movies and TV shows. With hundreds of thousands of visitors set to descend on San Diego, the need for refueling after hours of standing and walking through Hall H is a serious consideration.
While the Gaslamp and East Village offer plenty of dining within walking distance of the Convention Center, a number of venues are offering Comic-Con-themed dishes and drinks, alongside some standout spots perfect for a necessary breather from the pop culture immersion.
For a trip down memory lane, Candyland Café will pop up at the Bayside Kitchen and Bar space, paying homage to the board game invented in San Diego in 1948. The menu features Princess Lolly’s berry patch salad, rainbow burgers, and the Molasses Swamp beef and pork meatballs. Sweet Dreams barbecue chicken sandwiches, colorful milkshakes, and a shareable “Chocolate River” fondue are also on offer. For a bit of adventure, the Sweet Adventures Cupcake Cart lets guests pick a mystery card to receive a cupcake tower. Drinks include the Cotton Candy Cloud Soda with a glitter bomb, while adults can try the peppermint schnapps-flavored Mint Tini or the candy-dusted Sugar Trail with coconut rum and Midori liqueur. For those seeking an outstanding meal that’s an escape from the convention bustle, Animae is a notable choice, even without specific Comic-Con specials. James Beard Award finalist chef Tara Monsod prepares a menu highlighting her Asian heritage with modern takes on dishes like tuna kinilaw, Taiwanese chicken, and lobster palabok. The wagyu steak menu offers cuts from Japanese A5 Miyazaki to American wagyu. Anime-inspired cocktails like the Artemis, with gin, lychee liqueur, and white peppercorn orgeat, and the Spirited Away mocktail, pair well with the dishes. Reservations are recommended.
Homegrown Japanese restaurant chain Tajima Ramen, at its East Village outpost, provides a welcome respite. It will showcase sake flights and a special noodle dish alongside signature offerings like carnitas ramen and traditional tonkotsu. Shareable izakaya plates, including karaage, takoyaki, and pork gyoza, are also available. The Naruto ramen, filled with egg noodles, pork chashu, Naruto, baby bok choy, and fried garlic, is a highlight. Attendees can also indulge in a Pokémon sake flight featuring colorful sake cocktails that come with two Pokémon figurines.
In the Gaslamp Quarter, Tacos El Gordo offers Tijuana-style street tacos, consistently busy but with quickly moving lines. Attendees can fuel up on famous tacos with handmade corn tortillas and meats such as carne asada, adobada, and lengua. Each protein has a separate queue, so choosing the correct line is key. The handmade corn tortillas, scratch-made guacamole, and fresh daily salsa make the wait worthwhile.
Near the trolley tracks in front of the Convention Center, Lion’s Share stands as a whimsical, safari-themed local institution. Brothers Danny and Dante Romero, known for Addison and Wormwood, have revamped the menu, incorporating classic French techniques with Mexican and Southern Californian influences. The food menu includes venison sliders, duck and rabbit terrine, or a wild-game burger. Upstairs, a pool table, arcade games, and animal artwork offer additional diversions.
Barleymash, a lively Gaslamp Quarter restaurant on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Market Street, transforms into “Area 619 Alien Abduction.” Access to the Space Smuggler’s Cantina cocktail lounge is by invitation with a secret password, found via a hidden wormhole. Food options include a Pizza Planet Pocket, a spicy pepperoni pizza empanada, and a Zoidberg-er, a crab rangoon patty with sweet chile sauce and wonton crisps on a brioche bun, served with fries. For a secret hideaway, the underground speakeasy Prohibition, entered through a hidden door marked “Law Office – Eddie O’Hare, ESQ,” becomes the Smuggler’s Bar during Comic-Con. This subterranean den offers Star Wars-themed cocktails, such as the Endor Hunting Club, made with toasted rice-infused rum, mango, whole egg, and club soda, or the Smuggler’s Code, with whiskey and cherry apple bitters. Badge holders can inquire about bottle specials.
Not far from the main events, Galpao Gaucho is a Brazilian steakhouse offering Rodizio-style all-you-can-eat service and premium meats. Its extensive salad bar features over 45 items, including farofa, Brazilian chicken mayonnaise salad, and black bean and pork stew. Servers roam the floor with 18 types of grilled meats, such as rib-eye, salmon, and picanha served three ways. For a lavish experience, a 24-karat gold steak, wrapped and unwrapped tableside, is available. The restaurant also has a happy hour on weekdays from 4-7 p.m. and weekends from 3-6 p.m., with drink and steak specials, including filet mignon or a marble-cut rib-eye, accompanied by country potatoes and salad. Popular caipirinhas are available to pair with meals.
An easy walk from the Convention Center, Puesto at the Headquarters specializes in Mexico City-style tacos. These tacos come on corn tortillas cloaked in crispy cheese, with options like filet mignon dressed with pistachio serrano salsa or short rib quesabirria punched with Jalisco salsa. The lobster taco, stuffed with Maine lobster, black beans, and crispy onions, is another compelling choice. The cocktail menu includes a spicy margarita spiked with habanero and a refreshing watermelon version made with fresh fruit.
