Southern California residents are being advised to keep an eye out for a man wanted in connection with an alleged assault in Philadelphia, as authorities there believe he maintains known ties to the Los Angeles area. The Philadelphia Police Department has issued an active arrest warrant for Zymire Hughes, 22, who they report terrorized a woman earlier this month while reportedly wearing a "disturbing white face mask."
The incident took place during the early morning hours of August 12, specifically around 5:30 a.m., in the bustling downtown district of Philadelphia, directly across from City Hall. According to official reports from the city’s Police Department, a man later identified as Hughes approached and pursued a 40-year-old woman. He was notably described as wearing a distinct white mask, black clothing, and carrying a blue backpack. Police detailed that Hughes allegedly “made threatening comments while holding his hand behind his back,” a menacing action that resulted in the woman falling and sustaining injuries. After the confrontation, Hughes quickly fled the scene, reportedly entering a City Center station within Philadelphia’s extensive rail system.
With an active warrant now in effect, Hughes is believed to have potentially left the state of Pennsylvania. Law enforcement officials in Philadelphia have specifically pointed to his well-established connections to the West Coast, particularly highlighting Southern California and the Las Vegas area in Nevada. Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith conveyed to a local news outlet that Hughes "has a tendency to travel back and forth to the West Coast, California, the L.A. area, but also Las Vegas... for employment reasons." This explicit detail about Hughes’ movement patterns is especially relevant to residents here, as it suggests a likelihood of him seeking out work or residing in the region.
The Philadelphia Police Department is collaborating with federal partners in its search for Hughes. They are working alongside the U.S. Marshals to try to locate him and ensure his apprehension. Prior to identifying Hughes, the department had made public images and video of the suspect, clearly showing his distinctive white mask, blue backpack, and dark clothing, in an appeal to the public for assistance in identifying the individual. While his current whereabouts remain unconfirmed, the advisory from Philadelphia authorities serves as a direct alert for those living in the L.A. area to remain vigilant, given Hughes' documented history of traveling to and from our region for what police describe as employment-related reasons.
