Comic-Con International is back at the San Diego Convention Center from Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26, bringing with it the usual crowds of cosplayers, celebrity sightings, and previews of upcoming entertainment. With hundreds of thousands of visitors expected to descend on downtown San Diego, finding a good meal or a quick break becomes a priority after hours spent immersed in pop culture.
While the Gaslamp and East Village neighborhoods offer numerous dining options within walking distance of the Convention Center and Hall H, a selection of venues are offering Comic-Con-inspired dishes and drinks, alongside other noteworthy spots perfect for a breather.
Candyland Café, a pop-up at the Bayside Kitchen and Bar space, pays homage to the iconic board game invented in San Diego in 1948. Its menu includes Princess Lolly’s berry patch salad, rainbow burgers, Molasses Swamp beef and pork meatballs, and a Sweet Dreams barbecue chicken sandwich. For dessert, a shareable “Chocolate River” fondue is available, along with the Sweet Adventures Cupcake Cart where guests pick a mystery card for their cupcake tower. Mocktails like the Cotton Candy Cloud Soda feature glitter bombs, while adult options include the peppermint schnapps-flavored Mint Tini, the candy-dusted Sugar Trail with coconut rum and Midori liqueur, and the shareable Cherry Power cocktail with gin and cherry-flavored candy powder. A Sweet Adventure Checklist guides guests through activities, ending at King Kandy’s Castle.
For a truly immersive, albeit invitation-only, experience, Barleymash in the Gaslamp Quarter transforms into Area 619 Alien Abduction. Those with a secret password can find a wormhole to the cocktail lounge, Space Smuggler’s Cantina. The menu features a Pizza Planet Pocket, a spicy pepperoni pizza empanada, and a Zoidberg-er, a crab rangoon patty on a brioche bun with sweet chile sauce and wonton crisps, served with fries. Cocktails include the Warp Speed, made with rum, pineapple, blue curaçao, and lime, and the Mothership, which combines tequila, ube, and coconut.
Another secret hideaway is Prohibition, a subterranean speakeasy in the Gaslamp Quarter accessible via a hidden door marked “Law Office – Eddie O’Hare, ESQ.” During Comic-Con, it becomes the Smuggler’s Bar, offering Star Wars-themed drinks such as the Endor Hunting Club, made with toasted rice-infused rum, mango, whole egg, and club soda, or the Smuggler’s Code, featuring whiskey and cherry apple bitters. Badge holders can inquire about bottle specials.
Japanese restaurant chain Tajima Ramen, a homegrown establishment, will showcase sake flights and a special noodle dish at its East Village outpost, alongside signature items like carnitas ramen and traditional tonkotsu. Shareable izakaya plates such as karaage, takoyaki, and pork gyoza are also on offer. Attendees can try Naruto ramen or indulge in a Pokémon sake flight, which includes colorful sake cocktails and two Pokémon figurines, providing a comfortable spot for a breather between convention events.
Even without Comic-Con specials, Animae remains a destination for those seeking an exceptional meal. James Beard Award finalist chef Tara Monsod crafts a menu highlighting her Asian heritage with modern takes on dishes like tuna kinilaw, Taiwanese chicken, and lobster palabok. The wagyu steak menu, featuring cuts from Japanese A5 Miyazaki to American wagyu, is also available. Anime-inspired cocktails like the Artemis, with gin, lychee liqueur, and white peppercorn orgeat, and the Spirited Away mocktail, complement the dishes. Reservations are recommended for this experience.
For those craving Brazilian fare, Galpao Gaucho offers Rodizio-style all-you-can-eat service with premium meats. Its extensive salad bar boasts over 45 items, including farofa, Brazilian chicken mayonnaise salad, and black bean and pork stew. Servers circulate with 18 types of grilled meats, such as rib-eye, salmon, and picanha prepared three ways. A particularly extravagant option is the 24-karat gold steak, unwrapped tableside. A happy hour runs weekdays from 4-7 p.m. and weekends from 3-6 p.m., featuring drink and steak specials, including filet mignon or a 14- to 16-ounce marble-cut rib-eye with country potatoes and salad. Caipirinhas are also a popular choice here.
Just an easy walk from the Convention Center, Puesto at the Headquarters specializes in Mexico City-style tacos served on corn tortillas cloaked in crispy cheese. Options include the filet mignon taco with pistachio serrano salsa, short rib quesabirria with Jalisco salsa, and a lobster taco filled with Maine lobster, black beans, and crispy onions. The restaurant also offers excellent cocktails, such as a spicy margarita spiked with habanero and a refreshing watermelon version.
Near the trolley tracks in front of the Convention Center, Lion’s Share is a safari-themed local institution. Brothers Danny and Dante Romero have revamped the menu with classic French techniques and Mexican and Southern Californian influences. The food menu includes venison sliders, duck and rabbit terrine, and a wild-game burger. Upstairs, guests can find a pool table, arcade games, and animal artwork.
Finally, for a quick and consistently busy option, Tacos El Gordo’s Gaslamp location offers Tijuana-style street tacos made with handmade corn tortillas and meats like carne asada, adobada, and lengua. While lines may appear long, each protein has a separate queue, and the scratch-made guacamole and salsa are prepared fresh daily, making the wait worthwhile for convention-goers fueling up between panels.
