Comic-Con International returns to the San Diego Convention Center from Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26, bringing with it hundreds of thousands of visitors. Beyond the panels and cosplayers, attendees will be looking for places to eat and drink to refuel after hours of exploring pop culture. While downtown San Diego offers many restaurants and bars within walking distance of the Convention Center, several establishments are embracing the spirit of the event with themed menus and unique experiences.
One pop-up specifically designed for the convention is Candyland Café, taking over the Bayside Kitchen and Bar space. This venue pays homage to the iconic board game, which was invented in San Diego in 1948 by a schoolteacher. The menu features items like Princess Lolly’s berry patch salad, rainbow burgers, and Molasses Swamp beef and pork meatballs. Sweet Dreams barbecue chicken sandwiches and a shareable “Chocolate River” fondue are also on offer. For desserts, the Sweet Adventures Cupcake Cart allows guests to pick a mystery card to determine their cupcake tower. Drink options include mocktails like the Cotton Candy Cloud Soda, featuring a glitter bomb and edible glitter, and adult beverages such as the peppermint schnapps-flavored Mint Tini or the candy-dusted Sugar Trail, made with coconut rum and Midori liqueur. Shareable cocktails, including the Cherry Power with gin and cherry-flavored candy powder, are also available. Guests can also follow a Sweet Adventure Checklist through Jolly’s Gumdrop Mountains to a do-it-yourself cookie decorating station, culminating at King Kandy’s Castle.
In the Gaslamp Quarter, Barleymash is transforming into "Area 619 Alien Abduction." This lively restaurant offers access by invitation with a secret password to a cocktail lounge called Space Smuggler’s Cantina, accessible through a wormhole. For food, visitors can grab a Pizza Planet Pocket, which is a spicy pepperoni pizza empanada, or the Zoidberg-er, a crab rangoon patty served on a brioche bun with sweet chile sauce and wonton crisps, accompanied by fries. Themed cocktails include the Warp Speed, made with rum, pineapple, blue curaçao, and lime, and the Mothership, which combines tequila, ube, and coconut.
Another hidden gem in the Gaslamp Quarter is Prohibition, an underground speakeasy found behind a door marked “Law Office – Eddie O’Hare, ESQ.” For Comic-Con, this subterranean den becomes the Smuggler’s Bar, offering a secret hideaway for post-con drinks. Among its well-crafted cocktails are Star Wars-themed creations like the Endor Hunting Club, a mix of toasted rice-infused rum, mango, whole egg, and club soda, and the Smuggler’s Code, featuring whiskey and cherry apple bitters. Attendees showing their badge can also access bottle specials.
Beyond the themed experiences, several local spots provide excellent dining options, whether for a quick meal or a much-needed break from the convention floor. Homegrown Japanese restaurant chain Tajima Ramen, at its East Village outpost, will feature sake flights and a special noodle dish alongside its signature offerings like carnitas ramen and traditional tonkotsu. Shareable izakaya plates such as karaage, takoyaki, and pork gyoza are also available. Naruto ramen, filled with egg noodles, pork chashu, Naruto, baby bok choy, and fried garlic, is on the menu, and a Pokémon sake flight comes with two Pokémon figurines. This location provides a comfortable spot to take a breather.
For those seeking an outstanding meal that stands apart, Animae comes highly recommended. While it isn’t offering Comic-Con-specific specials, it is noted as a prerequisite for attendees seeking a notable dining experience. James Beard Award finalist chef Tara Monsod prepares a menu highlighting her Asian heritage with modern interpretations of dishes such as tuna kinilaw, Taiwanese chicken, and lobster palabok. The wagyu steak menu, offering cuts like Japanese A5 Miyazaki and American wagyu, is also available. Anime-inspired cocktails, including the Artemis with gin, lychee liqueur, and white peppercorn orgeat, and the Spirited Away mocktail, complement the dishes. Reservations are recommended for Animae.
Tacos El Gordo, a Tijuana-style taco specialist, maintains a consistently busy Gaslamp location. Despite the lines, service moves quickly, allowing attendees to grab famous street tacos made with handmade corn tortillas and a choice of meats like carne asada, adobada, and lengua. Guests should note that each protein has a separate queue. The scratch-made guacamole and salsa, prepared fresh daily, contribute to the restaurant’s appeal.
Near the trolley tracks in front of the Convention Center, Lion’s Share offers a whimsical, safari-themed setting. This establishment is described as a well-loved local institution, now under the direction of brothers Danny and Dante Romero. They have revamped the menu, incorporating classic French techniques with Mexican and Southern Californian influences. The food menu includes venison sliders, duck and rabbit terrine, and a wild-game burger. Upstairs, the restaurant features a pool table, arcade games, and animal artwork.
A Brazilian steakhouse, Galpao Gaucho, provides a Rodizio-style all-you-can-eat service with premium meats. Its extensive salad bar boasts over 45 items, including farofa, Brazilian chicken mayonnaise salad, and black bean and pork stew. Servers roam the floor with 18 types of grilled meats, such as rib-eye, salmon, and picanha served three ways. An extravagant option is the 24-karat gold steak, wrapped in gold foil and unwrapped tableside. For a more streamlined experience, a three-hour happy hour is available on weekdays from 4-7 p.m. and weekends from 3-6 p.m., offering drink and steak specials such as filet mignon or a 14- to 16-ounce marble-cut rib-eye with country potatoes and salad. Popular caipirinhas are available to pair with meals.
Finally, Puesto at the Headquarters is an easy walk from the Convention Center and specializes in Mexico City-style tacos. These tacos are served on corn tortillas often cloaked in crispy cheese, with fillings like filet mignon dressed with pistachio serrano salsa or short rib quesabirria punched with Jalisco salsa. The lobster taco, filled with Maine lobster, black beans, and crispy onions, is another compelling choice. The restaurant also offers notable cocktails, including a spicy margarita spiked with habanero and a refreshing watermelon version made with fresh fruit.
