Comic-Con International rolls into the San Diego Convention Center this Thursday, July 23, running through Sunday, July 26. As hundreds of thousands of visitors pack downtown San Diego, navigating crowds of cosplayers and celebrity sightings, one essential question remains: where to find a meal that keeps the energy up for sneak peeks at upcoming movies and TV shows. After hours of standing and walking, a good bite or a refreshing drink becomes a necessity.
While downtown San Diego offers plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance, several venues are stepping up with Comic-Con-themed dishes and drinks, drawing inspiration from everything from Star Wars to anime arcade games. Others simply provide a reliable spot for a breather from the pop culture immersion.
For a fully immersive, sweet experience, the Bayside Kitchen and Bar space will transform into Candyland Café. This pop-up pays homage to the iconic board game, invented in San Diego in 1948 by a schoolteacher. Guests can find themed dishes like Princess Lolly’s berry patch salad, rainbow burgers, and Molasses Swamp beef and pork meatballs. The menu also features a "Chocolate River" fondue, a glitter bomb-infused Cotton Candy Cloud Soda mocktail, and adult drinks such as the peppermint schnapps-flavored Mint Tini.
Further into the Gaslamp Quarter, Barleymash has been transported to Area 619 Alien Abduction. Guests navigate to the secret cocktail lounge, Space Smuggler’s Cantina, accessible only by invitation with a secret password. The menu features a Pizza Planet Pocket, a spicy pepperoni pizza empanada, and a Zoidberg-er, a crab rangoon patty. For another hidden experience, the subterranean speakeasy Prohibition becomes the Smuggler’s Bar during the convention, offering Star Wars-themed cocktails such as the Endor Hunting Club and the Smuggler’s Code, with badge holders receiving bottle specials.
Those seeking an outstanding meal without the overt themes can visit Animae. James Beard Award finalist chef Tara Monsod prepares a menu highlighting her Asian heritage with modern takes on dishes like tuna kinilaw and lobster palabok. Animae also features a wagyu steak menu and anime-inspired cocktails; reservations are recommended. For a more casual, yet essential, fuel-up, Tacos El Gordo’s Gaslamp location serves its consistently busy Tijuana-style street tacos on handmade corn tortillas, featuring carne asada, adobada, and lengua. Another option is Puesto at the Headquarters, offering Mexico City-style tacos with crispy cheese and spicy habanero margaritas. For a full Brazilian steakhouse experience, Galpao Gaucho offers Rodizio-style service with an extensive salad bar and 18 types of grilled meats, including an extravagant 24-karat gold steak.
