Hollywood is gearing up for the 40th AFI Fest, which recently announced its final two red carpet premieres: Peter Farrelly’s “I Play Rocky” and Brad Bird’s “Ray Gunn.” The festival is scheduled to run next month, from October 21-25, and will host all its red carpet premieres at the TCL Chinese Theatre, according to the American Film Institute.

“I Play Rocky,” directed by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly, chronicles Sylvester Stallone’s journey to write and star in the 1976 film “Rocky.” The other newly announced premiere, “Ray Gunn,” comes from Oscar-winning filmmaker Brad Bird and is described as a retro-futuristic neo-noir mystery. It features a voice cast that includes Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Waits. These films join “The Mosquito Bowl,” which was previously announced as a red carpet premiere.

Beyond the main premieres, AFI also revealed 12 films slated for the festival’s Special Screenings section. This selection includes works from notable filmmakers like Ava DuVernay, Diego Luna, Pedro Almodovar, and Martin McDonagh. Among the specific titles announced are “14th,” from DuVernay; “Ashes,” directed by Luna; “Behemoth!,” starring Pedro Pascal; “Bitter Christmas,” from Almodovar; and “Bunker,” which features Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. The section will also showcase films titled “Clarissa,” “Elsinore,” “Josephine,” “The Man I Love,” “Mouse,” “Tangles,” and “Wild Horse Nine."

The 40th AFI Fest is set to open with the U.S. premiere of “Wildwood” and will conclude with “Being Heumann,” a film from Oscar-winning filmmaker Sian Heder. Academy Award-winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are slated to serve as guest artistic directors. They will participate in a special event titled “An Evening with Phil Lord and Chris Miller,” which will be followed by a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s classic “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Reflecting on the milestone, AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale stated, “AFI FEST is where the world tells stories in the beating heart of Hollywood.” He added that the institute is proud to celebrate 40 years of bringing artists and audiences together to be inspired in “a powerful sense of community.”

For those looking to attend, AFI plans to release the full festival lineup on Tuesday. Individual tickets for the various screenings and events are scheduled to go on sale starting October 3.
