Tom Cruise will be honored with the American Film Institute’s 52nd Life Achievement Award, recognizing a career that spans decades and includes some of Hollywood’s highest-grossing films. The announcement, made Wednesday by the organization, confirms the gala tribute will take place on April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Proceeds from the event will support AFI’s various arts and education programs. Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, described Cruise as a "global icon." She also noted that she "especially admire[s] his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together," highlighting his "extraordinary commitment to everything he does" as both an actor and producer. Kennedy further stated that this passion has established him as an "extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world."

Cruise, now 64, has starred in films that, according to AFI, have collectively amassed nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office. His extensive filmography includes starring roles in seminal movies such as “Risky Business,” the original “Top Gun,” “Rain Man,” and “A Few Good Men.” Other notable projects feature “The Firm,” “Interview with the Vampire,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Minority Report,” “The Last Samurai,” “Collateral,” and the globally popular “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

His highest-grossing film to date is 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which significantly contributed to his career's box office success. Cruise has garnered four Academy Award nominations: two for Best Actor for his roles in “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire,” and one for Best Supporting Actor for “Magnolia.” His fourth nomination came as a producer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was a Best Picture nominee.

Beyond his Academy Award recognition, Cruise has received several other significant accolades. In 2025, he was given an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards. His contributions have also been acknowledged by the Cannes Film Festival, the Producers Guild of America, and with France’s Legion of Honor.

Looking ahead, AFI reports that Cruise is set to star in “Digger,” a film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Additionally, fans can anticipate his return to the character of race car driver Cole Trickle in “Days of Thunder 2.”

The AFI Life Achievement Award, established in 1973, honors individuals whose careers have significantly advanced the art of filmmaking. Recipients are chosen based on work that has earned critical acclaim and recognition from both peers and audiences. Past honorees represent a distinguished list of cinematic legends, including John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Bette Davis, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, George Lucas, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Francis Ford Coppola.

Eddie Murphy was the recipient of the 51st award, which was presented in April 2026, also at the Dolby Theatre, with the ceremony subsequently released on Netflix in May. The American Film Institute, founded in 1967, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to film education, preservation, and the promotion of filmmaking through programs like the AFI Conservatory, AFI FEST, and the AFI Catalog of Feature Films.
