Southern California college football saw shifts in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll this week, with UCLA making a substantial move up and USC holding steady.
UCLA climbed nine spots to No. 12 after its victory over Oregon. The Bruins, previously ranked No. 21, secured a 17-15 win by capitalizing on mistakes from the Ducks and stopping a critical two-point conversion attempt.
The loss proved costly for Oregon, which had been ranked No. 13. The Ducks, who had held their highest preseason ranking ever at No. 2, dropped out of the poll entirely for the first time in four years. This 17-15 home loss to UCLA brought their record to 3-2.
Meanwhile, USC retained its No. 19 ranking in the poll. The Trojans maintained their position following a win at Penn State.
Across the national landscape, the poll saw numerous changes after a Saturday filled with upsets. Georgia ascended to No. 1, moving up from No. 2, after defeating Alabama 20-17. The Bulldogs received 66 first-place votes from the panel of 70 media members, marking their first victory in Tuscaloosa since 2014 and their first time at the top of the poll since September 8, 2024. Georgia had been ranked No. 2 for five consecutive polls before this move.
Notre Dame, which routed Stanford 58-7, climbed one spot to No. 2, receiving one first-place vote. This marks their highest ranking since the final poll of the 2024 season. No. 3 Miami, which received two first-place votes, is followed by Ohio State at No. 4 and Indiana at No. 5. Indiana, which received the remaining first-place vote, moved up two spots after a narrow win at Nebraska.
Alabama remained at No. 6, while Texas dropped six spots to No. 7 after a loss to rival Oklahoma. BYU, Mississippi, and Texas Tech rounded out the top 10.
Beyond UCLA's climb, No. 15 Kentucky saw a significant promotion, moving from unranked after their 35-34 overtime win over Louisiana State. Louisiana State, in turn, dropped from No. 10 to No. 22. Other teams entering the poll were No. 21 Wake Forest, now 5-1 and ranked for the first time since late October 2022, and No. 25 Northwestern, which is 4-1 and earned its first ranking under fourth-year coach David Braun. Teams that dropped out of the rankings included Florida and Pittsburgh.
Historically, this marks the second time in three years that there have been three or more No. 1 teams in the first six polls. Georgia, Texas, and Alabama had previously taken turns holding the top spot in the first six polls of 2024. In another notable historical alignment, Notre Dame and Miami, rivals since their classic 1988 game, have not been together in the top three since November 9, 1993.
The Big Ten conference, which includes UCLA and USC, now boasts six ranked teams: No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Indiana, No. 12 UCLA, No. 17 Iowa, No. 19 USC, and No. 25 Northwestern. The SEC leads with nine ranked teams, followed by the Big 12 with five, and the ACC with three.
