The Los Angeles Rams secured their first victory of the season on Monday Night Football, beating the New York Giants 28-6. The Week 2 win brings the Rams' record to 1-1, allowing them to avoid the 0-2 start that often complicates a season. While the win wasn't entirely clean, the defense proved to be the day's standout unit, consistently pressuring Giants quarterback Jameis Winston.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford contributed significantly to the score, throwing four touchdowns. Davante Adams and Kyren Williams were among those who connected with Stafford for scores early in the game, helping the Rams build a 14-0 lead. However, Stafford did throw an interception into double coverage later, which appeared to be a poor decision.
The game's narrative was significantly shaped by an early injury to Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart. Dart left the field on New York’s opening possession with an apparent knee injury after being hit by two Rams defenders. He did not return to the game, though he was later seen on the sideline, suggesting his injury might not be as severe as initially feared. Jameis Winston was thrust into the game in Dart's place.
Winston, lacking the mobility Dart showed in Week 1, struggled against the Rams' pressure. While the defense kept Winston in check, he missed several throws, and some Giants receivers appeared open. The Rams defense capitalized, forcing punts and an interception through the first two quarters.
A welcome sight for Rams fans was the return of defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Despite being double and triple-teamed as is typical, Donald's presence opened up lanes for other defenders. Donald’s return provided crucial defensive firepower for Los Angeles.
The Rams' performance in Week 2 offered a contrast to their Week 1 outing against the San Francisco 49ers, where they appeared outclassed. This game suggested the Rams might indeed belong in the NFC West conversation, though much work remains if they aim to meet their preseason goal of reaching the Super Bowl.
Despite the strong overall defensive showing, the Rams' offense wasn't without its stumbles. Kyren Williams lost a fumble in the second quarter, providing the Giants an opportunity to gain momentum. However, the Rams defense held firm, limiting New York to just a field goal on that possession. Towards the end of the first half, the Rams put together another drive, but Harrison Mevis missed a field goal, leaving the score at 14-3 at halftime.
The second half began slowly for the Rams' offense, but their defense continued to dominate, battering Winston and preventing the Giants from gaining any traction. Stafford and Adams re-ignited their connection, with Stafford finding Adams for his third passing touchdown and Adams' second receiving score of the day. The Giants managed another field goal, bringing the score to 21-6, before Stafford connected with Terrance Ferguson for his fourth and final passing touchdown, sealing the game at 28-6.
The Rams successfully secured the win, playing against the team in front of them. While the game included some mistakes, the team's improved competitiveness compared to Week 1 was evident. The Rams will face their third consecutive primetime game in Week 3, traveling to take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football.
