Amtrak's popular Pacific Surfliner route will experience a complete shutdown across its entire Southern California and Central Coast span on September 12 and 13. All service between San Diego and San Luis Obispo will cease for the weekend, and crucially for those who rely on the train, no bus bridges will be available to replace the canceled train service. This means anyone planning train travel from Los Angeles to Orange County, San Diego, or the Central Coast that weekend will need to make alternative arrangements.
The comprehensive shutdown is the result of a coordinated effort by several rail agencies to perform necessary infrastructure work. Union Pacific, Metrolink, and the North County Transit District are all undertaking simultaneous projects along the busy LOSSAN corridor. Instead of implementing multiple, smaller disruptions, the agencies have opted to tackle several jobs at once, concentrating the inconvenience into a single weekend.
South of Los Angeles, crews will be working on the Orange Subdivision, an important section of track just south of Irvine Station. This work is designed to help extend Marine Way beneath the tracks, which will provide additional access to Orange County's Great Park. Further south, in the San Clemente area, crews are also scheduled to reconfigure work zones. These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts for slope stabilization and trail reconstruction in the coastal community.
Heading north from Los Angeles, the Ventura Subdivision will also be a hub of activity. Inside Tunnel 26, located north of Chatsworth, crews are set to perform ballast cleaning and critical water-pump maintenance. These tasks are essential for protecting the railroad tracks from deterioration over time. Additionally, various other locations along the Ventura Subdivision will undergo general track maintenance and rehabilitation during the closure.
Before the full weekend stoppage, travelers should also be aware of a disruption on Friday, September 11. Metrolink's repair work will affect two evening train services. Train 794 is scheduled to terminate in Los Angeles, with passengers then accommodated by bus for their onward journey. Meanwhile, Train 595 will be entirely canceled, and its passengers will also be accommodated by bus service.
While Amtrak connection buses will continue to operate during the weekend closure, it is important for passengers not to assume their regular train-to-bus itineraries will function as usual. Regularly scheduled train connections to these buses will not be available.
In short, for residents planning to travel by rail from Los Angeles to destinations such as San Diego, Irvine, San Clemente, Ventura, or San Luis Obispo on September 12 or 13, the Pacific Surfliner will not be an option. Alternate plans for transportation will be necessary for that entire weekend.
