Cathedral City residents should expect to see a notable increase in law enforcement patrols across the city starting Friday, as police prepare for a gathering of the Mongols Motorcycle Club.
The club's meeting is set to run from Friday through Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Golf Resort Palm Springs, located at 67967 Vista Chino. This event has prompted a coordinated response from local and regional law enforcement.
Cathedral City Police Chief Rick Sanchez confirmed the heightened police activity, stating in a Monday announcement that the department views the Mongols as "a documented outlaw motorcycle gang." Chief Sanchez emphasized that authorities have been planning for this gathering for weeks alongside regional partners, ensuring that residents will observe an enhanced law enforcement presence throughout the city.
The U.S. Department of Justice officially identifies the Mongols as an outlaw motorcycle gang, a designation that informs the comprehensive security measures being put in place. The planning for this event has involved extensive coordination between the Cathedral City Police Department, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the California Highway Patrol, and various other local agencies.
City officials, for their part, have made it clear they are not endorsing the event. They stated that "The city of Cathedral City did not invite this group, did not welcome this gathering and was given no say in their decision to hold it here." The city stressed it is not acting as a sponsor, host, or participant in the event and played no role in its arrangement, effectively distancing itself from the organization's decision to meet within its limits.
This isn't the first time the club has gathered in the area. Last year, the Mongols held their annual meeting at Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs, an event that saw roughly 1,000 members in attendance. That gathering concluded with 22 arrests on various alleged weapons and drug offenses, providing a historical context for the current security preparations. Local authorities are taking proactive steps this year to manage the situation and ensure public safety, with the multi-agency strategy reflecting the scale of the anticipated gathering and its implications for the community.
