The Malibu Farmers Market is set to return this Sunday to its longtime home at the Los Angeles County lot next to the Malibu Library. Shoppers can find local produce and goods there from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., bringing an end to a brief, but notable, detour.
This move follows a week where the popular market found itself operating from the Malibu City Hall parking lot. The temporary relocation was a direct result of the City of Malibu ordering the Cornucopia Foundation, which operates the weekly market, to cease operations at Legacy Park. The city cited a range of concerns, including public safety, insufficient parking, and compliance issues with the market’s permit.
According to a Friday statement from the city, a resolution was reached through collaborative efforts. "Since then, the city has worked closely with the Cornucopia Foundation, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and her team, and the Santa Monica College to return the market to the county lot."
The county lot at the library served as the market’s home for years before it temporarily relocated to Legacy Park. That initial move was permitted by the city while construction was underway at Santa Monica College’s Malibu campus in the Civic Center area. However, city officials later indicated that Legacy Park was never intended or approved to permanently host the market.
These long-standing concerns regarding Legacy Park grew more pronounced during the summer months, with increased visitor traffic creating additional pressure on local infrastructure. City officials noted that market vendor vehicles and booths accounted for nearly 40% of the public parking available in the Civic Center area, further highlighting access issues for neighboring businesses.
The situation escalated last week when the city issued the order for the market to vacate Legacy Park. At the time, City Manager Joe Irvin acknowledged the community's appreciation for the market, stating the city had a "responsibility to protect public safety and ensure city requirements are applied fairly." To ensure continuity, the city offered the City Hall parking lot as a temporary site for the market last Sunday while longer-term arrangements for a return to the county lot were finalized.
The Malibu Farmers Market has been a consistent presence in the community since 1998, offering a weekly gathering point for residents every Sunday. Its return to the county lot signals a familiar rhythm for weekend shopping.
