The historic Vision Theatre in Leimert Park officially reopened its doors on August 20, culminating a nearly $40 million restoration effort that spanned several years. The 729-seat venue celebrated its return with a 5 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The event saw attendance from Mayor Karen Bass, Councilwoman Heather Hutt, Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs General Manager Daniel Tarica, and various local arts and community leaders. Reopening festivities included performances by local artists and arts organizations, alongside a screening of *Hair Love*, the Oscar-winning animated short from Matthew A. Cherry.
Originally known as the Leimert Theatre when it first opened in 1932, the building features a blend of Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival architectural styles. It operated as a traditional movie theater until 1968 before undergoing several changes in ownership. In the late 1970s, it was acquired by the Jehovah's Witnesses and renamed the Watchtower. Actress Marla Gibbs purchased the building in the early 1990s, renaming it the Vision Theatre, before the City of Los Angeles acquired the property later that decade.
The recent restoration work was extensive, including the conservation of the auditorium's historic ceiling mural by artist Anthony Heinsbergen, repairs to original plasterwork, and the replication of historic finishes on walls and the proscenium arch. Ceiling grilles were restored, and the auditorium doors were refinished to their original grandeur.
This latest project builds upon an earlier $11 million rehabilitation completed in 2012, which brought parts of the building back into community use. The total investment in the Vision Theatre’s long-running restoration now totals nearly $40 million.
Moving forward, the city is partnering with Where Art Can Occur Theater Center, known as WACO Theater Center, to operate the venue. This collaboration aims to support a range of programming, including community events, commercial productions, theater rentals, arts education initiatives, and other cultural offerings. The reopening is particularly significant for Leimert Park, a neighborhood long recognized as a vital center of Black arts and culture in Los Angeles, positioning the Vision Theatre to become a major new anchor for the area.
