Luca Opperman reportedly jumped through the restaurant's drive-through window, armed with a spatula, to intervene with a customer who was allegedly threatening staff with a sharpened wooden stick.
The incident began, according to an Instagram user identified as @sweet.as.a.p who witnessed the event, when the customer reportedly grew unhappy with the wait time for her food. What followed was a situation that saw most of the restaurant workers retreat to a back room, as reported by KTLA. Opperman, however, chose a more direct approach to de-escalate the escalating tension.
Opperman, who told KTLA in an interview that he is a former gymnast and freestyle trampoline athlete, brought these skills into play during the confrontation. He reportedly confronted the woman head-on, spatula in hand, and was heard yelling, "Get out of here!" The employee's quick thinking and willingness to engage were, he indicated, driven by a serious concern for safety. Opperman stated that he believed the woman could have seriously injured someone with the stick she was wielding. The intervention proved effective. According to Opperman's account to KTLA, the incident concluded when he successfully managed to grab the stick from the woman. Following his decisive action, the woman was reportedly taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies, though the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident or the alleged arrest. Mercifully, no injuries were reported from the chaotic scene, KTLA confirmed.
