Residents and the L.A. County District Attorney’s office took note this week after pop singer Justin Bieber reportedly performed a surprise set in MacArthur Park on Tuesday, an event the district attorney called evidence of the park’s improving conditions. The pop star’s representatives have not yet confirmed his appearance.
According to social media posts, Bieber and a few band members set up on a grass lawn near a Central American fried chicken shop on 6th Street. He reportedly performed several songs, including the 2025 hit “Yukon.” Those present at the park on Tuesday appeared convinced it was Bieber, as was the L.A. County District Attorney.
L.A. County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman weighed in on Tuesday night, citing a clip of the “Yukon” performance as proof that conditions in the park were indeed getting better. In a post on X, Hochman described Bieber’s appearance as a “testament to the progress we are achieving to take back the park from drug dealers and enliven it for families.” He even extended an invitation, stating Bieber is “definitely on the invite list for next year’s Labor Day weekend picnic!”
While the district attorney highlighted the event as a sign of progress, confirmation from Bieber’s representatives was not immediately available. The pop star has previously dealt with an impersonator tricking a Las Vegas nightclub last year, adding a layer of ambiguity to such surprise appearances.
Bieber has recently embraced more intimate performances, including a stripped-down rendition of “Yukon” at the Grammys, where he appeared in boxers and black socks. In April, he made his headlining debut at Coachella, delivering a nearly 90-minute set. For a significant portion of that performance, he reportedly sat behind a laptop, singing along to his old music videos, taking his fans, known as Beliebers, on a trip down memory lane.
Just two days after the alleged performance, on Thursday afternoon, MacArthur Park saw a different kind of public activity. A swarm of federal agents and Los Angeles police officers descended on the area, complete with military vehicles. A loudspeaker issued warnings that anyone using narcotics would be subject to search and detention.
The juxtaposition of a pop star’s unconfirmed appearance being heralded as a sign of community revitalization, quickly followed by a large-scale law enforcement operation, highlights the ongoing complexities and attention surrounding MacArthur Park.
