Everson Royce Bar (ERB), a beloved fixture in Downtown Los Angeles's Arts District, is set to permanently close its doors on December 20th. The announcement comes as the bar celebrates its eleventh anniversary, ending a run that made it a local favorite.
Located at 1936 E. 7th St., next door to its sister business Silverlake Wine, ERB informed patrons via social media that operating in the City of Angels has become "disturbingly difficult." While the bar did not specify a single reason for the closure, the statement referenced the rising operating costs that are increasingly challenging local business owners across Los Angeles. This sentiment mirrors a broader trend of restaurant and nightlife closures observed throughout the region this year.
In their Instagram announcement, ERB shared a heartfelt message to its staff. The bar acknowledged their profound dedication, stating, "The way that ERB is loved by you will never be forgotten." The message also touched on the idea that "caring for anything in deep meaningful ways is becoming a lost art," celebrating the staff's commitment as "an absolute masterpiece."
Since opening in 2015, ERB consistently appeared on Time Out’s list of best bars. Editors often highlighted the establishment for its tasty, reasonably priced cocktails and its highly-praised single burger, elements that cultivated a loyal following among residents.
News of the closure prompted a wave of dismay among fans online. Commenters expressed devastation, with one noting it was "truly one of the best bars and bar food offerings around." Another fan called the news a "dagger to the heart." The broader frustration with the business climate was also evident, as one commenter remarked on the "countless closures" and suggested that "LA is unfortunately not a business friendly city," urging city officials to step in.
This closure is not an isolated event for ERB co-owners Randy Clement and April Langford. Their other business, West Altadena Wine and Spirits in Altadena, also recently ceased operations, with its final day occurring on Sunday, October 25th. ERB's impending closure contributes to what some have described as an "ongoing restaurant bloodbath" in Los Angeles, which has seen several other establishments shutter in recent months. Notable closures include Downtown LA’s Rossoblu, set to close on November 1st, and Sora Craft Kitchen, which closed earlier this month.
Before its final last call on December 20th, ERB expressed hope to see as many of its patrons as possible. The bar also indicated that more details regarding the closure would be shared soon.
